7Up: Make a Melting Vending Machine

The Melting Machine is a new guerrilla marketing campaign that has been set up in Buenos Aeries by 7Up.  A ‘vending’ machine made entirely from ice, offers up a cold drink on a hot day.

As the machine melts, passers-by are invited to grab a 7Up, and to guess what time they think the last can will be freed from the ice. This guess is made via Twitter using the hashtag #MeltingMachine and gives the company a great way to attract attention as a PR stunt and by using social media in an integrated campaign.

What is your social media really communicating?

I came across this funny little comic strip this afternoon while reading up on social media trends.  Although it is referring to interns communicating on behalf of the company on social media sites, the concept made me think.

I once heard a business professional say that it would be wiser to teach someone who has been with the company for a long period of time to communicate and connect with target audiences via social media rather than turing a brand-new employee and turning them loose to tweet and post whatever they choose, simply because they are young and understand how to post a tweet or a status update.

Nandos extended opening times in its Manchester outlets by five minutes, in what they’re calling #NandosFergieTime.

Nandos posted a update on their Facebook page saying:

In honour of Sir Alex Ferguson’s announcement that he is retiring we’re proud to introduce ‘Nando’s Fergie Time’ – all our Manchester Nando’s will be open 5 minutes later tonight.

A quirky stunt that won’t cost them a hell of a lot but will certainly have plenty talking about them as it has already been covered on Yahoo, Metro and Digital Spy to name just a few.

An article has recently been released that discusses the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch stating he hates fat people.  THE CEO! PR nightmare? I think so.

The CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch states that the brand is meant to be geared toward the “cooler and popular people” meaning the slim people.  His reasoning is that fat people are not cool people and that they don’t deserve to wear his brand.

Mountain Dew's latest advert has been pulled after being dubbed 'the most racist and misogynist ad of all time'.

Asides from the fact that the advert puts a more than one touchy subject in the limelight ... did nobody else watch it and just think ... what?

Understandably in the commercial world these days you have to find something a bit different to catch your audience's attention ...
