Amy Winehouse…

Amy Winehouse kicked off her European tour Saturday night in Belgrade, Serbia, and almost immediately it appeared that the singer was off her face and unable to perform.

Why on earth did her PR people let the performance go ahead when she was obviously so unable to perform?  A failed appearance is a hell of a lot easier to recover from, than the events of last Saturday night, which can be viewed below:

Serbian media described the concert before 20,000 fans as a “scandal” and a “disaster”.

After the show, Winehouse’s publicists Outside Organisation cancelled concerts in Istanbul on Monday and in Athens on Wednesday. A statement said fans would be told “as soon as possible” whether the rest of her European programme would be fulfilled and apologised on the singer’s behalf for the cancellations.

However, as BBC Newsbeat reports, her whole European tour — which had another eight performances scheduled, resuming in Bilbao on July 8 — has now been cancelled as Winehouse tries to return to “her best”.

“Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen,” her spokesman said.

Winehouse, 27, has publicly battled her drug and alcohol addiction for years, as the five-time Grammy winner has checked in and out of rehab several times in the past few years. Her latest stint was less than a month ago at London’s Priory Clinic, where she stayed for one week. So her recent antics should come as no suprise to her management.

Why did management not check on the star who has a history of pulling similar stunts?  Why was Amy let near alcohol and/or drugs? Why was the event booked if Amy was not in the right frame of mind to perform? Was a crisis plan designed to combat this situation should it arise?
