ATMS: The New Ad Masters?

In Australia, ATM users willing to watch advertisements before making transactions could eliminate their banking fees.

Customers ATM is the US’ largest independent provider of ATMs with more than 6000 terminals and corporate affairs manager Rohan Martin said the concept could hit the UK and Ireland.

“Time will tell,” Mr Martin said. “Whilst the very large advertisers see it (ATMs) as an excellent medium, we’re mindful that the intrinsic function of the terminal remains”.

US company Free ATMs NYC rolled out the concept late last year and millions of users have made the most of fee-free withdrawals by simply watching commercials for up to 30 seconds.

In Australia, consumers are often hit with fees starting from $2 for withdrawing cash from an ATM if they use a machine that is not linked with their bank.

This is an interesting case. I don’t see banks in Ireland branding their ATM’S in anything other than their own branding. It would be great to see a bank charges disappear in return for watching a short ad.
