Puma: Open First Sustainable Store

PUMA don’t like to preach sustainability but definitely like to practice it. They opened their first Sustainable store in Bangalore, India on August 23rd. The store is locally developed, sourced out of India, and incorporates a number of revolutionary design elements to ensure that it meets the highest criteria for sustainability.

They’ve experimented with a bunch of cool stuff in the store – using the Earth to cool it rather than an AC, solar panels on the roof to help power the store, and low VOC paint. Posters are made of jute, and almost 90% of the store has access to natural daylight minimizing our use of artificial lighting. But of course, if we do need to illuminate our store we’re using super-efficient LED lights.

The opening night was a carbon-neutral launch with guests pedaling for power. The creative community was present in full force and B.L.O.T. performed a special audio-visual, sustainability themed set. Last, but definitely not the least the art installation sketches were exhibited around the store highlighting the various themes of waste minimization, recycling, and giving back to the city.

The store’s green credentials are more than skin deep, as the retail space will also offer a range of products made from organic cotton, as well as Puma’s “Wilderness Collection,” a line of apparel, footwear, and accessories primarily sourced and manufactured in Kenya from sustainable materials.

“Puma is happy to take this pioneering step forward for the retail industry,” says Franz Koch, the company’s CEO. “Establishing a sustainable Puma Store underlines our commitment to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, energy, water and waste in Puma offices, stores, warehouses and direct supplier factories by 2015.”

What a great initiative from Puma. Not only is this a great PR story for the brand but also lets their competition know how important their CSR strategy is. CSR is so important these days as not only does it see MNC’s invest in local economies but also adds a feel good factor to publics buying from these MNC’s.
