Lululemon: Bend over or no refund?

Lululemon announced a product recall last week but to get your cash back on their black Luon yoga pants, store assistants required customers to perform a little test to ensure the pants were faulty. What was the fault I hear you ask? Well, in the case of these yoga pants, they were simply too sheer. Rather than simply hand customers their cash back, according to Jezebel, Lululemon store associates have been asking customers to put the pants on and bend over, so they could check the pants were faulty.

Christina Phillips, a customer from Toronto, wrote on Lululemon’s Facebook page last week: ‘The sales associate perused my butt in the dim lighting of the change room and deemed them “not sheer”. I felt degraded that this is how the recall is being handled. I called the Guest Education Center to confirm this is their protocol, and they verified that yes, the “educators” will verify sheerness by asking the customer to bend over’.

While the company have released a statement saying the ‘bend over’ test is not a standard company procedure, Lululemon’s CEO, Christine Day, told Bloomberg.com,  ‘The truth of the matter is the only way you can actually test for the issue is to put the pants on and bend over.’

However Sari Martin, vice president of communications firm ICR, who represent Lululemon said, ‘We do not require guests to demonstrate the sheerness of their bottoms.’

It will be interesting to see how this plays out as ‘Pantgate’ is getting plenty of attention across social media platforms Twitter and Facebook.
